Weather
The weather in Iquitos is warm and humid with average annual maximum temperature of 31˚C (88˚F) and minimum of 21˚C (70˚F). The dry season runs from June to November, and the flooded season extends from December through May. Each season brings differences in the plant and animal life in Amazonia, as well as in the temperature. Both seasons are great times to visit the Amazon.
Getting There
LAN PERU flies to Peru from 25 U.S. gateways, as well as from major cities around the world. Passengers will change at Lima for the flight into Iquitos, which arrives daily at 5:05 p.m. Your return flight will leave Iquitos at 6:30 p.m. Travel to Peru is easy for Americans, as there is virtually no jet lag.
Packing List
Life is casual aboard the M/V Aqua. Bring comfortable walking shoes, light-weight long pants and long-sleeved tops, a hat, lightweight rain gear, sunscreen, extra socks, mosquito repellant with DEET, and of course, your camera, with charger and extra batteries. Don’t forget to include some items that you can give away to the locals (t-shirts, pens and paper are especially prized).
If you plan to travel on in Peru, it is a good idea to bring hiking boots for Machu Picchu and the Andes. If you are visiting Lima, bring dressier attire for dining out.
Health and Safety
No particular vaccines are required for Peru, but some are strongly advised. Check the U.S. Centers for Disease Control website for the latest information. http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/default.aspx. Travelers to the Amazon Basin are advised to take both anti-malaria medication and yellow fever shots. If you plan to extend your journey to Cusco and Machu Picchu, ask your doctor about medication for altitude sickness.
Peru is well known for its warm, hospitable people. However, when traveling in large cities, visitors should be cautious about pickpockets and street crime, as they would be anywhere in the world. Keep your belongings close (don’t keep valuables in a backpack) and avoid wearing flashy or expensive jewelry
