According to Inca legend, Sun God Inti ordered his children Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo to rise from the waters of Lake Titicaca in Peru and establish the Inca civilization. Today Lake Titicaca is easy to visit before or after an Aqua Expeditions cruise.
At 12,500 feet (3,800 meters), Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world and is gloriously surrounded by even taller mountains that divide Peru and Bolivia. All visitors to Lake Titicaca arrive first in the quaint shore town of Puno, where Quechua and Aymará people live largely the same way that their ancestors did generations ago. Continue by exploring the Uros Islands in the Bay of Puno, a group of 40 islands woven from reeds that grow along the shoreline. Fishermen and their families, as well as others, have lived among these floating islands for centuries. Further out into Lake Titicaca, on the island of Taquile, local Quechua people still dress traditionally and lead visitors to pre-Columbian ruins hidden in the hills.
Please note that pre- and post- Amazon cruise itineraries are not included in the Aqua Expeditions Amazon River cruise rates and are priced separately. We will be happy to recommend our preferred tour operators to arrange this component of your Peru holiday.
