TripAdvisor’s Reviewers Choose Aqua Destinations as Two of Top 25 Landmarks for 2015

TripAdvisor’s  Travelers Choice Awards recently revealed their top picks for 2015 landmark attractions across the world. In the TripAdvisor survey, travellers around the world vote for their favourite landmark, creating a list of iconic sites that everyone should try and see once in their lifetime.

Peru and Southeast Asia were featured as the two destinations with these landmarks with Angkor Wat in Cambodia taking first place and Machu Picchu in Peru taking second. In addition to the TripAdvisor landmarks vote, earlier in March 2015, Trip Advisor announced their top 25 travel destinations for 2015 including Siem Reap in Cambodia (#2), Hanoi in Vietnam (#4) and Cusco (#16) in Peru.

Check out our top reasons for including these landmarks in your cruise with Aqua Expeditions:

Visiting Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia

The Angkor Archaeological Park in Cambodia contains the remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire. The temple complex at Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world stretching over 400 square kilometres. Angkor Wat was originally founded as a Hindu capital in the early 12th century, gradually transforming into a Buddhist temple mecca toward the end of the century. Angkor Wat was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992.

Aqua Expeditions’ tip when you visit Angkor Wat: arrive early and wait by the water to watch the sun rise!

Machu Picchu in Cusco, Peru

Perched atop the Andes Mountains in Peru is the Incan citadel of Machu Picchu. “Machu Picchu” translated means “old peak” and the site of this Incan landmark is situated on a mountain ridge above Peru’s Sacred Valley. First built in the 15th century and later abandoned, it is the most familiar icon of Inca civilization with most archaeologists believing that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti. Renowned for its dry-stone walls, which were fused together like intricately carved puzzle pieces, without the use of mortar, the mountaintop ruins are as mesmerising as they are mysterious. Machu Picchu was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983.

Aqua Expeditions’ tip for visiting Machu Picchu: Go in May when the temperatures are balmy, it is relatively quiet, and the greenery is lush after the rainy season.
