Here are some of our favorite award winning films and books based in Vietnam that are definitely worth diving into:

The Lover

Love a good romance? “The Lover,” based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Marguerite Duras, depicts the illicit affair between a teenage French girl and a wealthy Chinese man. The film based on this novel was nominated for an Academy Award in 1992. We visit the Duras home on our Aqua Mekong cruises.

Good Morning Vietnam

If you are someone who enjoys comedic relief mixed with drama, the film “Good Morning, Vietnam” starring the late Robin Williams will have you laughing and crying at the same time. Radio personality, Adrian Cronauer (Robin Williams), is sent to Vietnam to give the American soldiers a good laugh. Cronauer’s take on war is shocking yet hilarious – until he begins to experience tragedies of war first-hand. This film won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar.

The River’s Tale: A Year On the Mekong

A fascinating memoir called The River’s Tale: A Year on the Mekong written by former New York Times Correspondant Edward Gargan, depicts his year-long journey on the Mekong River. This memoir is filled with thrilling experiences the author endured during his travels.

Aria Amazon & Aqua Amazon Cruises – Recommended Books & Films

The Peruvian Amazon has it’s own list of literary and film “must read/must see” treasures:

Fitzcarraldo

A notable film based in Peru, “Fitzcarraldo,” is a classic tale of a character determined to accomplish his dream. Brian Sweeney, “Fitzcarraldo Fitzgerald”, a foreigner to Peru, has a great love for opera. Fitzcarraldo’s love for the classical music sparks the idea to build an opera house in the middle of the jungle. His determination and perseverance pushes him to try to accomplish this goal. This film was nominated for a Golden Globe, a BAFTA Award and garnered multiple awards including a win at the Cannes Film Festival in 1982.

El Abrazo de la Serpiente

A fascinating foreign-language film filled with mystery and excitement is “El Abrazo de la Serpiente” or “Embrace of the Serpent.” Released in 2015, this film is ideal for the true adventurer and explorer. When Theo, a German adventurer, becomes ill in the Columbian Amazon – he and his companion are forced to find help. An Amazonian Shaman leads Theo to journey into the jungle to find a healing plant and to find his inner self. This film was nominated for an Oscar, Ariel Award and won countless awards including the Cannes Film Festival in 2015.

Lost City of Z

Need a book to ignite your inner spark for exploring the Peruvian Amazon? A great option for opening the flood gates of imagination is The Lost City of Z by David Grann. This book will hook you in with its plot. Based in the Amazon, the author sets out to find a lost city in the Amazon jungle after finding clues left from a previous explorer.
