Civilization in Vietnam’s coastal city of Nha Trang dates to as early as 192 AD yet most visitors come for the timeless natural wonders. Nha Trang Beach ranks among Vietnam’s most popular sandboxes. Locals and visiting tourists alike wake- and windsurf, water ski and paddle kayaks in the surrounding turquoise waters. Experienced dive instructors offer day trips into the archipelago of islands scattered in the East China Sea where the protected marine park is home to a vibrant rainbow of hard and soft corals plus around 350 species of fish. On land, trek into the emerald paddy fields and through local villages towards the mountainous terrain of Hon Ba Forest, home to spectacular waterfalls ideal for a refreshing dip.
Historical sites worth visiting here include the incense filled Po Nagar Cham Towers built in the 8th century to honor the goddesses of the Hindu Cham kingdom. These are still frequented by local Buddhists, as is Long Son Pagoda with its 14-metre high White Buddha. Also worthwhile, the elegant Nha Trang Cathedral is the center of religious life for Nha Trang’s Catholic community.
