The Mekong has always been a river of stories. For centuries this legendary waterway has carried traders, pilgrims, fishermen, and explorers through the heart of Southeast Asia, connecting remote communities and ancient civilizations along its winding course. Now, Aqua Mekong's new Kratie expeditions invite guests to follow it further than ever before — deep into Cambodia's northeastern reaches, where extraordinary wildlife, timeless villages, and centuries-old traditions still thrive.

Sailing Where Others Do Not

What distinguishes this voyage is not simply where it goes, but how far — opening privileged access to landscapes and communities that remain largely untouched by conventional tourism.

While most Mekong river cruises follow familiar routes between major cities, Aqua Mekong ventures further upstream into Kratie, a charming Cambodian province renowned for its natural beauty and biodiversity. The river here feels different, widening into broad currents bordered by forested banks and small river islands. Fishing boats glide past. Wooden homes rise on stilts above the floodplain, and daily life unfolds at the rhythm of the water. Other vessels disappear from view. The Mekong grows calmer, slower, and more intimate.

A Rare Encounter with Irrawaddy Dolphins

No encounter defines the Kratie expedition quite like coming face to face with the Mekong's most remarkable inhabitant: the Irrawaddy dolphin.

These endangered freshwater dolphins are found in only a handful of locations across Southeast Asia. The waters near Kratie remain one of the last few places on Earth where they can still be observed in the wild. Led by expert naturalists, guests venture out by skiff along the Kampi River — a protected stretch of the Mekong where the dolphins are known to surface.

The boat drifts. The river reveals subtle movement beneath the surface. Then a rounded forehead breaks the water. Another follows. The dolphins appear briefly before slipping once again beneath the current — fleeting, graceful, and utterly unforgettable.

Living Traditions Along the Riverbanks

As the expedition continues upstream, Cambodia's rural landscapes reveal themselves in layers. In Angkor Ban, one of the country's most beautifully preserved villages, guests wander among traditional wooden houses that have stood for generations. Artisan communities still practice sustainable indigo weaving, creating textiles using techniques passed down through families. Cycling routes wind through the surrounding countryside, passing rice fields, fruit orchards, and stilted homes where children wave from shaded verandas.

Deeper into Kratie province, guests explore Koh Trong Island by bicycle, foot, or tuk-tuk — passing pomelo plantations and Khmer stilt houses shaded by towering trees. In the village of Peam Chikang, families have refined the craft of aluminum cooking pot–making across generations, while cycling through nearby Khmer and Cham villages opens up a world of its own: birds nesting in centuries-old trees and a cultural mosaic that rewards every turn.

Local conservation and sustainable farming initiatives reveal how deeply these riverside communities are rooted in the land — and how thoughtfully they are stewarding it for generations to come.

Sacred Landscapes, Enduring Legacy

Cambodia's spiritual heritage reveals itself in profound ways along the Mekong. At Phnom Hanchey, a sacred hill rising above the river, temples and shrines overlook sweeping views of the valley below. One of Cambodia's most revered pilgrimage sites, Phnom Hanchey has drawn devotees since the pre-Angkorian era — long held to symbolize Mount Meru, the mythical center of the universe in Hindu-Buddhist cosmology.

The twin hills of Phnom Bros and Phnom Srei carry legends woven deep into Khmer folklore. Nearby stands Nokor Bachey, a 12th-century Angkorian temple whose enigmatic stone towers and intricate carvings bear witness to the Khmer Empire at the height of its power.

Set against the river's gentle rural rhythms, these ancient sites illuminate a storied history that continues to shape Cambodia today.

Boutique Luxury on the Mekong

Aqua Mekong’s Kratie expeditions feature a four-night voyage or a comprehensive seven-night cruise between Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City. Both itineraries blend wildlife encounters, cultural immersion, and active adventure through skiff excursions, bike rides, kayaking, and guided walks. Onboard, small-ship luxury takes the form of elegant river-facing design suites with floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, personalized service with a 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio, and world-class cuisine celebrating the region's finest flavors.

These are immersive journeys into the Mekong's most authentic and least explored reaches — an exclusive window into a Cambodia that reveals itself only to those who venture far beyond the familiar.

And in the quiet moments — watching the river glow at sunset or waiting for a dolphin to ripple the surface — guests may realize that they are not simply cruising the Mekong. They are journeying into Cambodia's wild heart.

Aqua Mekong’s Kratie expeditions launch in 2026 with an exclusive inaugural sailing on August 14–18, with sailings available through 2027 and 2028. Book your voyage now or contact our Expedition Consultants to learn more.
